Tiny Book Review: Open & Editing Humanity
Open: 4.5/5
Entertaining. Amusing stories: his father screening real estate on
whether the back yard would permit a tennis court. His father deciding he would
be a tennis pro while he was in the womb (Question: when does a fanatical father
matter? Seems to be present in many entrepreneurs as well as the origin of
Agassi.) The story of Pete Sampras and the 1$ tip.
Editing Humanity: 4/5
Good for a review of some of the personalities involved in discovering CRISPR-CAS9
system. Did not know it was a bacterial defense mechanism against viruses. Did
not know that bacteria that have antibiotic resistance tend to lose their
CRISPR-CAS9 systems leaving them vulnerable to bacteriophages. Story of first
germ line edited twins in china were interesting - specifically, importing CCR5
deficiency in order to induce HIV resistance. Ethical questions are important
now yet minimal discussion. Did not know 1% of cow DNA is snake dna imports.
Patent implications/problems (Law + issue = more complicated issue) were
explored but an optimal solution not really discussed. List of disorders where
germ-line correction is allowed should be formalized. Style is very much in the
style of a newspaper. Felt like serial articles around a definite theme.
